Fire Hazard Severity Zones
Colma Fire Protection District
Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZs) are official designations used by CAL FIRE to identify areas in California that are at risk of wildfires. These zones help communities understand how likely a wildfire is to occur and how severe it could be. The zones are classified as Moderate, High, or Very High, based on factors like local vegetation, weather patterns, and landscape features.
FHSZ maps are used to guide building standards, inform insurance rates, and ensure that homes and properties are built with wildfire safety in mind. They also help homeowners know where defensible space and fire-resistant construction are required by law.
Whether you’re buying a home, planning construction, or just want to know your risk, understanding Fire Hazard Severity Zones is an important step in staying safe and prepared.
