Create An Action Plan

Make a Plan When Every Second Counts

Detailed Action Plan Tips

1. When You Hear the Alarm

  • Act immediately—don't assume it's a false alarm.
  • Alert everyone in the home and begin your escape plan.

2. Know Your Escape Routes

  • Identify two exits from every room (a door and a window, if possible).
  • Keep exits clear of furniture or clutter.

3. Stay Low & Go

  • If there's smoke, stay close to the ground to avoid inhalation.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth if possible.

4. Before Opening Doors

  • Feel the door with the back of your hand—if it's hot, don't open it.
  • Use your second exit instead.

5. Once Outside

  • Go to your designated family meeting place.
  • Call 911 immediately from outside the home.
  • Never go back inside for people, pets, or belongings—leave that to firefighters.

6. Special Considerations

  • Assign someone to help children, seniors, or anyone with mobility challenges.
  • Practice your plan at least twice a year.
