Detailed Action Plan Tips
1. When You Hear the Alarm
- Act immediately—don't assume it's a false alarm.
- Alert everyone in the home and begin your escape plan.
2. Know Your Escape Routes
- Identify two exits from every room (a door and a window, if possible).
- Keep exits clear of furniture or clutter.
3. Stay Low & Go
- If there's smoke, stay close to the ground to avoid inhalation.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth if possible.
4. Before Opening Doors
- Feel the door with the back of your hand—if it's hot, don't open it.
- Use your second exit instead.
5. Once Outside
- Go to your designated family meeting place.
- Call 911 immediately from outside the home.
- Never go back inside for people, pets, or belongings—leave that to firefighters.
6. Special Considerations
- Assign someone to help children, seniors, or anyone with mobility challenges.
- Practice your plan at least twice a year.
